Classrooms, offices and student workspaces are generally assigned at the start of the term or at other times as required. Those assigned to specific spaces must not change these assignments without informing management. Assignments of rooms and workspaces are, however, subject to change as business needs dictate.

Since students use the same desk for several months in a row it becomes tempting to treat one’s space as a second home. It is fine to personalize the work space you’ve been given by adding little decorative touches such as toys or photos, but recognize that ultimately you are responsible for maintaining that space during your stay as a student much like a tenant has responsibilities towards their landlords. You may not use floor space as storage space. VanArts reserves the right to treat material found on the floor as unwanted garbage to be tossed out. Bottles and food containers must also not be left at your desk.

Furthermore, we ask that students treat their desks and equipment as responsible adults by not writing on table tops or light tables just as if you were in a studio. During your entire stay at VanArts your behaviour is observed by students and staff who may be your future partners or employers.

Each student workspace consists of a desk space, light table (for 2D animation students) and computer. This is your workspace for the entire duration of the program.

The school has lockable compartments for you to keep your belongings in and you provide the lock. The computer labs do not have individual desks, but separate lockers are provided throughout the building. If you use a locker to store your belongings you will have to buy a key or combination lock. Please leave your combination numbers or spare lock keys with Administration so that in case of emergency we can help you access your lockers.

At selected times outside of regular hours, VanArts conducts part-time classes. These courses are held during the evenings and weekends. You will be notified of the dates and times at the onset of each course so that you can plan your after-hours work patterns accordingly. Full-time students may enroll in these courses at a discounted price provided there are seats still available.

Because you may be sharing your workspaces with part-time students we request that you please clean up your workspaces and put your belongings away before each part-time class session. We are not responsible for any lost artwork or personal belongings. Light tables and computers not in use during these classes are available to full-time students on a first-come, first-served basis.

We go to great lengths to ensure students have access to labs and editing facilities after class hours. In exchange we expect the students to respect our need to occasionally use the personal workstations for our part-time classes. Sometimes this might mean that a student has to temporarily move to another desk for the duration of that part-time class on Saturday or during an evening.

Students are expected to leave their desks in a condition that can be adapted for someone else’s use during these part-time classes. In a studio, an employee is expected to keep their workspace clean and orderly and we have the same expectation.

Computer animation workstations may include pre-assigned software documentation. These books are to be used on the premises in the computer labs only. Please talk to your instructor if you wish to make any photocopies from the books or wish to purchase a set.

VanArts’ screening room, the Bob Godfrey Theatre (named after founding advisor and Academy-Award winning animator) is available for students to screen films after class hours. Occasionally staff may schedule special screenings of material deemed of interest for the students.

Frequently, enthusiastic students like to share favourite films with their classmates or introduce rare cultural work that may be unfamiliar to the majority of artists enrolled here. Currently there are no formal policies governing the use of the theatre for students wishing to show films for others; in the past it has been sufficient to let students govern themselves, and informally arrange for screenings and announcements of screenings on their own. Inviting outside parties to a movie night must be approved in advance by Administration.

Occasionally, VanArts may need the theatre for meetings, seminars or other official matters. We ask that students be conscientious when they use the theatre and to leave it in a clean and orderly fashion for the following morning.

A major concern is that students follow established protocol with theatre equipment when they finish using the room. The volume on the speakers must be turned to the lowest setting and shut off. The overhead video projector must be turned off as well, to extend the life of the projector’s bulb.

Classroom Areas Classrooms, offices and student workspaces are generally assigned at the start of the term or at other times as required.
