The news continues to spread that our home city of Vancouver is the #1 hub in the world for animation and visual effects production, in addition to film & television and high tech industries for web development, interactive media and video games. Several articles, stories and resources have been posted online in recent weeks, and we are proud to highlight them here.

According to VEC’s website, “When it comes to Digital Entertainment & Interactive (DE&I), these days the buzz is all Vancouver.”  Our local industry includes:

  • Close to 1,000 businesses
  • More than 40,000 jobs, contributing billions of dollars to the city’s economy
  • One of the top video game clusters, third largest film & television centre in North America, and the largest cluster of animation & VFX studios in the world.

B.C.’s high tech boom blasts skyward

A recent article on CBC News reports that our high tech sector now employs more people than mining, oil & gas and forestry sectors combined, with companies competing for talent and the film industry leading the way.

At studios run by major film companies such as Sony Pictures Imageworks, Industrial Light & Magic and Technicolor’s MPC, specialist lighting artists and VFX artists are averaging $105,000 per year, while senior animators are averaging $93,000.
